My husband and I sold our beloved California 1929 Tudor home (and a lot of the accumulated 30 years of clutter), so we could streamline into a Pacific Northwest Modern replacement home. In planning our move, we had to pack and indefinitely store everything we owned. I needed a long-term traveling project with limited supplies, so I decided to make a variety of lap-sized quilt blocks each with a modern design.
I allowed myself one duffle bag of cream, black and orange sewing supplies, plus an iron. I didn’t really know what I was doing but I precut a bunch of black and cream rectangles and spent the next 6 months in a car and rentals, hand sewing this quilt, block by block.
Inspired by 50’s barkcloth designs and my love for simple streamlined graphics, I made a welcome-to-your-new-home gift.
(Found fabrics, vintage ribbons, yarn, cotton floss, cotton batting. Hand turned appliqué, hand embroidery, machine pieced and hand quilted.)
