ROBIN ROMAIN TEXTILE ART

The First Cut is the Hardest

2022 | 12"x 18"

This piece was from a workshop I took on The Quilty Nook, which is like an online quilting bee of your favorite neighbors. The workshop is titled Layers of Life and taught by Los Angeles textile artist Debra Weiss of Specks and Keepings. I had the pleasure of meeting this generous artist who invited local Quilty Nook subscribers to her fabulous home. See what I said about favorite neighbors?

The technique is to hand-sew with the tiniest stitches a few layers of thin, overlapping fabrics. This creates a magical texture of translucencies that can be embellished however you choose. Hours of intuitive and meditative fun!

(Vintage silk and rayon scarves with hand embroidery.)
