To me, quilting doesn’t make sense yet. I love looking at improv quilts, some of them I think are beautiful, others seem a jumble of shapes and colors. I don’t fully understand why I like some and not others. I know part of it has to do with eye movement and shape relationships and color combinations and composition, and I also know what works for me may not work for you.
With this small quilt I limited my pallete to three colors with three strong values. Then I made a variety of half log cabins. Then I placed them in every combination possible until my head spun. Then I made a slew of mini quarter squares and auditioned them as sashing or borders or maybe a random block. I puzzle-played with all these pieces until it worked for me. Does it work for you?
(Hand-dyed linen scraps, gelli plate printed cotton sheet, cotton batting, cotton perle floss. Machine pieced and hand quilted.)
